I keep flip flopping on locking my fics as a result of all this.

Obviously most of my stuff has likely already been scraped but now I'm more worried about other AI developers still being a bag of d**ks.

Also, I think it's gross how some fans are stealing people's works to train large language models with so that they can do whatever they want with people's works. Real d**k move too.

In my experience, locking didn't work, but I'd like to know if I'm wrong.

My fic series was stolen, AI likely used to redo stuff, and sold as a series on all the major book stores.

It was my only locked fic, no others stolen, and as soon as I found out, I unlocked it so it would be easy for Amazon workers to see proof it was mine with a date stamp on it.

The whole AI/fanfic thing is so frustrating and concerning. So far I don't see hope for a solution amd that's super disheartening.

I'd really like to be wrong.

Yikes, I’m sorry that happened to you, Mayalaen!! Did they at least do something about it? The whole “aRt shOulDn’t bE cOpYrIghTed aNd iNtElLecTual ProPerTY iS a CorPorAtE sCam” thing is ridiculous. Sure, it’s not like you can sue someone because you wrote a book about something and someone else wrote another book about the same topic, but like… The fact that it’s even being discussed whether outright copying something, specific ideas, is “theft” or not is stupid enough already without people thinking AI magically somehow makes it different.

not to sound like a boomer but I miss when video games included manuals with maps and some small trivia about the characters

I miss when you could buy them and hold them in your hand instead of being forced to Google shit and scroll through a billion ads on IGN or some shit to hope that whatever you need is not only there but written well enough that you can actually understand it

Unlocked childhood memory: buying a new game in the store, and then on the drive home, opening up the clamshell case to pull out and read the instruction manual with my brother.
